Girl scouting is a culture based on its’ Promise and Law within an environment made up of females from different economic and racial backgrounds with the same goals, becoming positive contributors to society. “The Girl Scout Promise and Law are shared by every member of Girl Scouting. The Girl Scout Promise is the way Girl Scouts agree to act every day toward one another and other people, and the Law outlines a way to act towards one another and the world.” 1 The troop leader help create the culture of the troop through their level of commitment and self esteem. You must be willing to put forth a lot of hard work and effort, knowing that the reward is helping girls to become positive contributors to society and self satisfaction.
You, as a troop leader, have to create challenges and rewards that would make the girls willing to meet the challenge for the reward that’s ahead for them. In one of my group assignments, when the girls were about 10 or 11 years old, I choose two major universities, The Catholic University of America and Howard University, for the girls to write to the presidents. From the two, they were allowed to pick the University of their chose to write to, as future students. Both presidents of the two universities that the girls wrote to responded positively and the girls’ enthusiasm were so high, that some of the girls with low self esteem, changed overnight.
During my tenure as a Girl Scout troop leader, for about nine years, my experiences have been rewarding, challenging as well as beneficiary. I saw about 20 little girls grow into respectable teenagers. All of the girls in that troop entered colleges and universities around the country. In addition, all have developed personal relationships and have become respectable adults.
